Happy MLK(Martin Luther King) day everyone. It’s made for an interesting time in Pittsburgh, as there is no traffic, and some of us are still actually working. This weekend, was a great weekend for sports yet again. Sure the Pens lost, but what can you do with two goalies who haven’t collectively done anything. The story of the night has to go with Pechursky(Pechurski, was incorrect spelling on the back of his jersey).
He just arrived from Russia in December, he’s only played 6 games, and all of his gear was not allowed by the NHL standards. So he ended up using Fleury’s white pads, his gloves(not NHL sanctioned, but they allowed it due to circumstances), and his own “Itech” helmet. However, ITECH doesn’t have a contract with the NHL, so they had to put stickers all over the things that promoted that brand.
What a crazy game it was, and Pechursky actually did fairly well, stopping 12 out of 13 shots in the game. He also was awarded the 3rd star of the game. Surely being that young, and playing well in a game full of NHL superstars has got to have his confidence high. It was more fun to watch the game after Curry was subbed out for Pechursky.
The Chargers, Cowboys, and Ravens all lost this weekend. Nothing makes me happier than to see those three fail so badly. The Chargers, easily the “trendy” to pick every year, has been a bust. It never get’s old seeing them lose. The Ravens, just had no quarterback in the play-offs this year. Flacco was beatable, and he’s going to need some much needed work in the off-season. The Cowboys? Well they just quit.
The most notable news story for Pittsburgh this weekend had to be the Panthers coming out and beating Louisville. It took an overtime to do it, and unlikely scorers to get the job done, but it ended in a fantastic way, and it’s good for them to be dominating the Big East again. The Associated Press came out with their rankings this morning, and finally, the Panthers have cracked top 10 coming in at 9. It’s a great team, and Coach Dixon is getting closer and closer to another deserved Coach of the Year title, if he can keep these young kids scrapping like they have been.
All in all it was a great weekend for sports, and I can’t wait to find out who’s going to the Super Bowl. I’m really hoping it’s the Vikings or Saints vs. the Jets. It’s time for two different teams to get the the dance and fight it out. Plus, the Jets remind me of an 05 Steeler team.
