Over in the Hill District, while the city was preparing for the G-20 Summit, erecting fences, and boarding up businesses, a small tent community filled with protesters was camping and preparing for their protests in order to be organized for the two day summit meetings. On Wylie Avenue in the Hill District, the tent city at the time had grow to as much as 60 people. However, it’s anticipated that the community will surely grow in anticipation for the G-20 Summit.
“We’re going to have to rearrange,” said Cheryl LaBash, an organizer with Bail Out The People, she was also stated as saying, “I think it’s really been terrific,” said LaBash, 60, a retired road construction inspector for the city of Detroit. “The reason we’re here with all the violence baiting and the G-20 and what they say is to make people remember those without jobs.”
Good for them really. As long as they aren’t getting harassed and everything is peaceful, well then awesome. It’s quite amazing how everything can come together, and as long as it’s peaceful everyone should take part in watching. Freedom of Speech is a powerful tool and when used correctly really can work, here’s hoping to them being able to do it without any violence.
The only thing I’m concerned about is the harassment side. The “Seeds for Peace” group was harassed, took it to court and lost. I’m all for the Patriot Act, and the cops searching the bus the first time. I’m not for however, the cops following them around time, and doing search after search, in an attempt to figure out what they had planned to protest. Let them be, at the first sight of destruction or criminal laws being broken then go after them.
I understand the police rule in the city and why it’s needed. I’m for the security and the control. I’m not for the protesters being harassed because of what they voice. We all have that right to speak.
Also I want to add the great thing about Twitter, I’ve been doing daily searches about what people feel about the G-20 and the city. It’s great to read it all and I’m happy people are airing their opinions over the web!
