The Monroeville Historical Society is hoping the festival they are hosting has a great impact on the community as well as “recruiting” new members to join their ranks and help protect the historical markings around the area. The Heritage Festival will take place at McGinley Road off Haymaker Road at Western Pennsylvania Hospital, Forbes Regional Campus.
Also on debut, will be various historical houses, that will hold tours and are handicap accessible so everyone can enjoy. The Historical Houses are located across from HealthSouth Rehabilitation Center. Not only that, they have various games and craft making for the younger children that will attend the Festival. Various activities are:
Decorate Pumpkins ($1.00)* Paint Rocks($1.00) * Create Scarecrows($4.00) Bring your own pants and shirt to stuff($2.00) * Churn Butter-Bake Bread * Play and Learn about a Dulcimer.( No admission charge. Activities free except where noted.)
Sounds like a good deal to me. Take your kids out for a day, have them occupied and having fun while learning about history and events all at the same time. Also, for the more college/resume oriented people out there. The Historical Society is looking for new volunteers and helpers.
They don’t say it, but I will. If your going to join, don’t think of it as work. Think of it as a great college/resume builder. People love to see the extra curricular activities and charitable foundations you’ve helped listed on your personal profile. Also, not to mention the networking and experience of working with others while helping for a great cause. All in all, a great way to help yourself and the community around you.
Mary Lou Span, the organizer of the event has this to say about recruiting efforts for The Historical Society:
“We really want to continue to keep the community aware of the historical society,” said organizer Mary Lou Span. “The turnout is really great and the kids look forward to it.”
“I’d like to start young people thinking about and continuing the whole understanding and remembrance of Monroeville,” Span said.
Which is great. She also admits that asking for help can be rough at times, but essential in keeping the spirit of old Monroeville alive. The event actually isn’t going to take place until October 18th, but I felt it was needed to mention it and get the eyes of the families out there that plan ahead. It’s surely going to be a great fall activity to do with your kids, and a very cost effective way for kids to have fun and learn in the process.
