Peaceful Hill District March Today

Today in the Hill District, close to 400 activists marched peacefully on behalf of the jobless in the city and around the area.

The March for Jobs, organized by a coalition that included the national Bail Out the People Movement, was one of the first of what will probably be many demonstrations surrounding the G-20 meetings Thursday and Friday at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center Downtown.

During the 40-minute walk from the Monumental Baptist Church to Freedom Corner in the Hill District, people marched behind a banner that said “A jobless recovery — no way! A real jobs programs now.” A white pickup truck played music and people led cheers in support of jobs for all, while police blocked off the streets for the demonstration.

A perfectly timed response to the G-20 making it’s turn to the city next week.  Hopefully all marches can take place in a peaceful and respectful manner.  Be safe out there for in Pittsburgh from now until next week.  Protesters will be present and making their voice heard.
