I can safely say that after last night’s game, the West Virginia University Student Section is beyond classless. However, that’s not even the worst thing really. What’s worse is when one of West Virginia’s players comes out and says it’s stupid, like Da’Sean Butler said:
“It’s annoying,” West Virginia’s Da’Sean Butler told reporters afterward. “It shows people outside our state that we don’t have class. That’s not what we’re about as a team or a state. It gives us a bad name.”
You’re damn right it does Da’Sean. This isn’t the first time the student section of West Virginia has done something completely downright classless either:
Profane chants from West Virginia students were audible on TV last month against Ohio State, while on 10 separate occasions during last Saturday’s matchup with Louisville, students chanted the name of the woman that Cardinals coach Rick Pitino had an affair with outside his marriage.
Really WVU? I know school students say things and act a way with the crowd mentality. However, watching last night’s action and what transpired with assistant coach Tom Herrion getting hit in the face with a coin? Was that really necessary?
This is the difference in where fans and players are much different. Fans are fans for a reason, because they either couldn’t play or weren’t good enough to make it. Players have the ability to be overly physical because they have the avenue to do it ala the court. Fans take their anger on the refs out on everyone. It’s embarrassing, and shows no respect for you’re own school, team, or the other fans who are there to just watch the game.
Here is the video of the actual incident that had happened with the assistant coach getting hit in the face:
Even if it says it was a penny, it’s just something that shouldn’t be condoned, and should give a little more of a black eye to the issue. It’s just a shame that fans have to come in a ruin or magnify a situation that could be dealt with by the players and coaches handily. I don’t know, I guess as I get older my passion for the sport is shown in different ways. I cheer with a passion, but I’d never cross the line into physical abuse of anyone else who shared a different view.
