Pittsburgh, Are We The Best Sports City?

In a story shown to me by @gaitlady via twitter.  I feel it’s too good of an article to not make mention of!  This article from sportingnews.com ponders if Pittsburgh really is one of the best sports cities around.  It doesn’t really matter what people from outside the city say either.  This awesome city has 2 major league teams that won titles in the same year.  Practically unheard of, by any means.

As our own Mayor Changehisnameforeverythingstahl(Ravenstahl) is quoted as saying in the article:

“It’s been quite a year in Pittsburgh, with the Steelers winning the Super Bowl, the Penguins winning the Stanley Cup and our local college football and basketball teams having successful seasons as well,” Mayor Luke Ravenstahl says. “Sports fans in Western Pennsylvania have had a lot to be proud of these last 12 months. Pittsburgh truly is the City of Champions once again.”

Damn straight.  No matter how bad anything went last year with the Penguins, or how mad the offensive line made some people regarding spotty play, both the Pittsburgh Steelers and Pittsburgh Penguins brought home trophies.  But, what makes this city really great?  It’s got to be our fans.  Without a doubt probably the most passionate fans anywhere.  We travel well, we take care of our own, and we are more than ready to do what we have to do to support our teams.

The absolute best thing has to be when the players recognize us as helping them through tough times or seeing us out there in support.  Santonio Holmes stated:

“We thank them,” Super Bowl 43 MVP Santonio Holmes says, “for being our 12th man.”

It doesn’t get any better.  Oh wait, did I mention we have a University of Pitt basketball team that can virtually make the tournament with ease every year?  Sure, they lose heart breakers or supposedly choke when they really need a win.  However, I’d bet anything that there is a college somewhere out there that is dying to have a consistent berth year after year after year.

About the only thing that could mean more to Pittsburgh is if the Pirates would actually get their butts in gear and not just do it for the money.  At some point winning was important to them, and they must get back to it.  One transplanted Pittsburgher knows exactly what the city wants and needs:

“You’re born into the Steeler Nation. People get into hockey, and they love the Penguins,” says Steelers receiver Hines Ward, who in his 12th season in Pittsburgh could count as a naturalized citizen. “The Pirates were great back in the day, and hopefully they can be again. If they can get back on track, they’ll have the whole trifecta—football, hockey and baseball.”

It’s just amazing how one city can get so involved in showing their pride in who they are and where they come from.  Like I said in my first post, regardless of where you are, or whoever you are.  Everyone is a “Yinzer” at heart.
