Pittsburgh Sports News

Well, I’ll be the only site out there that isn’t going to write about OMG BIG BEN ROETHLISBERGER coming back to OTA’s today!  I really don’t care, and it doesn’t  even matter yet at least until the start of August.  We’re going to talk about various stories going on around the city today.  The Pirates made a trade, and the Pens want college kids to flush out the CEC.

Let’s start with the latter.  The Pittsburgh Penguins released an invite today for a large amount of college kids to come help the CEC and the construction crews by flushing the toilets all at once.  Interesting you say?  Well, it’s because the plumbing unit needs to make sure that the CEC pipes can handle the load of constant flushes throughout the course of an intermission.  Which is pretty awesome, that a group of kids will be able to see the new CEC practically finished before anyone else.

Here’s a little information in an article posted today by the Penguins:

The Pittsburgh Penguins, who pioneered a popular student ticketing program known as “Student Rush,” will now give local students the chance to participate in a unique milestone event that involves the simultaneous flushing of all the toilets in the new CONSOL Energy Center.

It’s a necessary part of the development of any new arena or stadium – the need to test all the toilets and urinals to confirm that the pumps can handle the water flow.

Say hello to the “Student Flush.”

It will be held on Thursday, June 10 at 4 p.m. – presented on behalf of the Penguins by PJ Dick Hunt and McKamish.

“I don’t know that anyone has ever done a promotion around the required simultaneous flushing of the toilets in a new facility, but we thought we could have some fun with it,” said David Morehouse, president of the Penguins. “Students make up such a large part of our fan base that we thought we’d offer them a chance to participate and help us out. People probably don’t even know that this is a requirement, but you have to do it once in every new arena.”

A total of 250 students will take part in the event. All must be age 18 or older.

Just pure awesome.  It’s really kinda cool to see an organization get the fans and community involved.  Even if it is just a matter of flushing the toilets.  I’d do it in a heartbeat if I could!

Moving on to the Pittsburgh Pirates and their trade for left-handed starter Dana Eveland in a trade with Toronto, sending minor-league reliever Ronald Uviedo to the Blue Jays.  All I can say about this is meh.  Eveland started out the season pretty decent, and has recently fallen back to earth regarding his pitching numbers.  Another thing this possibly says is that Morton is in trouble, and could be moving to the bullpen, or even optioned back to AAA, or they will be keeping Lincoln down longer than expected.  I guess it’s a wait and see issue at this point, but who knows really. Let’s check out the article and what Neal Huntington thinks:

The Pirates have acquired left-handed starter Dana Eveland in a trade with Toronto, sending minor-league reliever Ronald Uviedo to the Blue Jays.

Eveland, 26, has a 16-21 career record with a 5.66 ERA. For the season, he was 3-4 with a 6.45 ERA, with 21 strikeouts and 27 walks, much of that driven by three consecutive poor starts before being designated for assignment May 23. In those starts, he allowed 34 baserunners over 9 1/3 innings.

Eveland will immediately join the Pirates’ rotation.

General manager Neal Huntington said Eveland “has shown the ability to be an effective major-league starting pitcher. He has an interesting four-pitch mix, and we feel this acquisition is a potential upgrade for our current rotation with the upside of years of control and improved production.”

The Pirates’ 40-man roster remains full.

So all in all, the Pirates at this point are a baker’s dozen or so away from .500. Here’s to them making trades and their continued dominance against a terrible Chicago Cubs team.

I think it would be great if the Big 2 didn’t give up rights to the name forcing the Big 10 to stay the Big 10 with 12 schools
