Steelers Draft Day, Pirates Terrible Record, Pens Lose in OT

I figured I’d put the only bright spot of yesterday first.  The Pittsburgh Steelers did not trade Big Ben, and they admitted that they wouldn’t even consider moving him unless it was for a blockbuster trade.  That makes me happier than I should be, but come on, he’s the franchise quarterback.  Once he starts winning everything will smooth out.  I have a feeling YinzBurgh will see my point, as most of the concerned parents who were hating on him prior to the draft, would then be able to explain to their kids what he’s done wrong after they start putting numbers in the win column.

Anyways, on to more important things, like the NFL Draft.  I personally thought the first day aside from the few trades was actually highly predictable.  I didn’t particularly enjoy when they’d show the draftees on the phone excited before they were even announced to the crowd.  Total lack of surprise that would of probably made for some good drama.

Maurkice Pouncey, now a member of the Pittsburgh Steelers

Regardless, the Pittsburgh Steelers selected Maurkice Pouncey from the Florida Gators.  It’s great news because this was easily the highest rated Center in the draft.  A center, that has also played guard in his first few years at college, and will likely be starting at guard while Justin Hartwig plays out his contract.  It’s a smart move, and it’s showing Steeler Nation that they are willing to get back into the running game, that they flat out abandoned last year during some games.

The next two days should be even more wonderful for the Steelers.  This draft is considered deep by Kevin Colbert.  He’s also stated that he’s unwilling to move up in the draft and he’s happy where he is at.  So here’s to the Pittsburgh Steelers drafting a CB, LB, and a WR.  All needs at this point.  Either way just like old faithful, Ray Shero, in Colbert I trust.

Now we’re moving on to the depressing news.  Possibly even laughable news.  The Pittsburgh Pirates suffered their greatest loss in the franchise’s history yesterday to the Milwaukee Brewers.  How bad did they lose by?  Oh you know, 2 touchdowns and 2 field goals.  That’s right, they were shut out and beat by 20 runs.  Unbelievable.

I can’t believe I let myself get so excited every year about this team, and then become so angered when the team gets destroyed after a few good weeks.  I really believe that they will not sniff .500 again for the rest of the year.  They have no back-end starting rotation, and their middle reliever guys are a joke.  It’s just unbearable to be honest.  I want to love them dearly, yet every year they crush my spirits.

The Pittsburgh Penguins went out last night and had themselves a long 3OT game with the Ottawa Senators.  Which sucked because they were on the losing end of it.  That’s about all I have dealing with the Penguins…after a loss like that.  It’s best to look for Saturday as the close out(since it’s away from home), and get on to the next round.

I know they’re gonna do it Saturday, I just have a feelin.

I feel your pain regarding the Pirates, every damn year! Oh well, I guess it will be that much sweeter when they finally do something.
As far as Big Ben goes, I’m frankly a bit disappointed in Steeler Nation. I know the big dummy made some mistakes but come on, you gotta be behind your guys right!? I’ll still be rocking my #7 proudly, awaiting his return.
The blog has come a long way, good stuff man. Cheers!
