Seriously? I can’t even believe I had to write that title. The Chiefs? One of the NFL’s longest running jokes as of late? You have got to be kidding me. Well, as most of us can’t believe it, it happened. The Steelers let penalties, a returned opening kick-off, and some spotty defense, take them down this week.
While the kick-off return is no surprise, the defense letting big plays happening is. This is the first time in a long time I’ve seen the defense,
play that terrible on the pass in a long long time, AND THIS WAS AGAINST THE CHIEFS. The Chiefs were even without Bowe(suspended for the substance policy). Come on now. It’s no surprise the Steelers are weak on the corners, but you can’t let this kind of game happen against the Chiefs. It’s all but damning evidence that this team isn’t what it was last year, and certainly not the Wild Card team(if they even make it) they were in 2005.
Bruce Arians again did a great job of abandoning the run at the end, throwing in a cold Willie Parker, while letting the hot handed Mendenhall sit on the sidelines. Not to mention, when your two yards from the 1st down and possible field goal range for Jeff Reed, who in their absolute mind picks a sweep play? Why not do a simple slant, you must trust in Charlie Batch, he got you down field and he can get the pass off. After all, he’s regarded as the best back-up quarterback in the league. *Injury was unknown until today, I look like an idiot for saying that, but why not put the third string in and try.*
I really think that the sadness of this season relies in the coaching. Well, more-so offensive coaching than it does the players. Plays get called correctly, the team moves down the field, and as soon as it’s going good, the run is abandoned and the ball starts getting thrown wildly, incomplete passes happen and the drive is killed. This isn’t the Steelers were used to and it’s time to get back to real team we know they are. Use a fullback, quit saying that a fullback doesn’t exist in the offense if you continually use a tight-end out of position as the full back. Trust the run, and most certainly trust the line to protect Ben. Too many times yesterday I saw the lineman standing around as Ben was getting harassed on the pass plays. It’s time for someone to say something regarding issues on and off the field. If Ben’s calling the plays I still put it on Arians, as he’s the one to tell people to audible and not let the players run-amuck.
Mike Tomlin kinda sorta acknowledged this yesterday after the game. He said something along the lines of, it’s my fault, I thought these players were professional and were supposed to be prepared to play football, obviously not, and we will change. It’s time to go back to the hardass he was in his first year and let these people know who’s boss. I’m anxious to see what happens the rest of the year, but losing to the Chiefs is a horrible sign that the Steelers peaked to early, and losing personnel is shooting them in the foot repeatedly.
Here’s to next week.
*UPDATE*
All of this was written prior to the fans knowing that Charlie Batch has a broken wrist. The Steelers now need another Quarterback. God Help Us All.
