Finally a well deserved piece of information coming out of the NCAA and both polls(AP and USA Today) which have Pitt ranked in the Top 10. It’s been a long time and I think it’s well deserved. The only thing I look at however is the teams that surround us and could potentially dominate us without even blinking.
Don’t get me wrong, I think the Pitt Panthers are very good, defensively, one of the best in the NCAA. However offensively, I don’t think we
can score against teams with the defenses such as LSU, USC, OSU, and Boise State. Another great thing coming out is that, the team actually looks like the competent team it should of been last season with Bill Stull at the helm. I’m just as surprised as most people after watching his meltdown last year in his first bowl game.
Dion Lewis is a flat-out beast. Sure he may be undersized(5’8, 190lbs), but I think of him as an even more productive running back than Sprowles of the NFL. All in all, a great time to enjoy Pitt Football, and a proud moment to see them finally get the credit they deserve. I am salivating at the thought of being able to play a high-profile team and being able to beat them.
Here’s and excerpt from the article posted at pantherlair.com:
“Every game counts right now,” freshman running back Dion Lewis said after the win over Syracuse. “This stretch is crucial. We got one out of the way and we need to just keep on knocking down whoever steps in front of us.”
Pitt’s 8-1 record is the first time the Panthers have held that mark since 1982. That season was also the last time Pitt was ranked in the top ten in the month of November by the Associated Press.
The Panthers are one of three Big East teams ranked in the current top 25. Cincinnati (9-0, 5-0) is fifth in both polls, while South Florida (6-2, 2-2) is 23rd in the AP and 24th in the coaches poll. West Virginia (7-2, 3-1) is also 23rd in the coaches poll.
Pitt’s place among the nation’s top teams is reflected in the NCAA’s statistical leader board. Lewis is seventh in the nation with an average of 126.56 rushing yards per game and 15th in scoring. Redshirt senior quarterback Bill Stull is fifth nationally with a passer rating of 161.61. Redshirt junior defensive end Greg Romeus is 20th with an average of .83 sacks per game, and Pitt as a whole is the top sacking team in the country, averaging 4.33 sacks per game.
As for tonights event, I’m sure you know that the Steelers are playing the Bronco’s and you don’t need any more information than that. Go Steelers!
